Antivivisection is the opposition to
VIVISECTION, that is, experiments on living
animals, which is practised in the
pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries on
the grounds that it may result in discoveries
of importance to medical science.
Antivivisectionists argue that it is immoral
to inflict pain on helpless creatures, and
that it is unscientific because results
achieved with animals may not be paralleled
with human beings. They also argue that it is
unjust to make animals suffer in order that
people may benefit, and that vivisection has
not added to people's power over disease.
Antivivisectionist groups, such as the
Animal Liberation Front, sometimes take
illegal action to draw attention to their
cause.
